  • 1 oz red food coloring (gel)
  • For the Cream Cheese Frosting: 8 oz cream cheese (full-fat, softened)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the sugar and vegetable oil until blended. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in buttermilk and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Mix in the red food coloring until evenly combined. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture; stir until just combined.
  5. Pour the batter into prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow cakes to cool before frosting.
  6. For frosting, beat softened cream cheese and butter together until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and mix until fluffy.
  7. Once cooled, frost the top of one cake layer before adding the second layer and frosting the entire cake.
